Kochi: A campaign demanding the Kerala Cricket Association to shift the venue of the India-West Indies ODI in November to the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi has gaining momentum on the social media platform.
The playing surface at the stadium was renovated ahead of the 2017 FIFA Under-17 world cup. However, if the KCA decide to host the ODI there, the turf will have to be dug up to lay the cricket pitch.
Footballers including Kerala Blasters Iain Hume and Vineeth CK as well as Sashi Tharoor MP and writer NS Madhavan reacted to the development after the fans of Kerala Blasters started the social media campaign using the hashtag # SaveKochiTurf.
They have wondered why for the sake of one match, they have to rip the pitch that has taken years to get to the current standard. Above all many people questioned why KCA was resolute in hosting the ODI in Kochi when the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, which had hosted the India-New Zealand T20 last November is available.
