Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that life-saving medicines should be first made available to Indians before help is offered to other nations "in their hour of need.
His remarks came hours after US President Donald Trump warned of "retaliation" over New Delhi's ban on export of a key anti-malaria drug - hydroxychloroquine.
Friendship isn't about retaliation," the 49-year-old Congress leader tweeted. "India must help all nations in their hour of need but lifesaving medicines should be made available to Indians in ample quantities first," he further wrote.
