Chennai: Funeral rites for the demised former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa were re-performed by her family in Ayyangar tradition after they protested that it was not done the right way by her party.
Jayalalithaa’s step-brother Varadaraju said that she was not an atheist but a Hindu who followed the religious tradition and visited temples. Keeping with the Hindu tradition, her dead body should have been cremated and not buried. Only then, her soul would attain moksha, Varadaraju said.
The rites and rituals were led by Varadaraju himself under the guidance of the priest Ranganath Ayyangar.
