Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government promulgated an ordinance for conducting jallikattu and it was signed by Governor C.Vidyasagar Rao. Chief Minister O.Paneersselvam will inaugurate the jallikattu on Sunday at 10:00 am at Madurai.
Thousands, including celebrities, had been protesting on Chennai’s Marina Beach for several days to remove the jallikattu ban.
The Supreme Court had banned the sport in 2014 after activists raised concerns that it included cruelty towards animals. But the present ordinance amended the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act which will then exempt jallikattu from its context.
