Riyad: Saudi Arabia has long been defined by the oil that flows from the Kingdom. Now Saudi is trying to tie its future to another natural resource it has in abundance, sunlight.
Under Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the world's largest oil exporter is all set to plow money from renewable energy. With an aim to emerge as a global force in clean power, Riyad recently tapped a Saudi energy company to build a solar farm that would generate enough electricity to power 200,000 homes.
By the end of the year, Saudi Arabia aims to invest up to $7 billion to develop seven new solar plants and big wind farms. The country also hopes to provide as much 10% of its power generation by the end of 2023.
