A recent study has revealed that parents who are exposed to certain chemicals found in detergents, shampoos and conditioners may be associated with birth defects in child. Conducted on both mice and rats, the study found that the chemicals, known as Quaternary ammonium compounds or Quats can lead to birth defects of the brain, spine or spinal cord.
The mice and rat did not even need to be dosed with the chemicals to see the effect. The mice showed birth defects only by placing them in quat-based cleaners rooms. The study was detailed in the journal of birth defects research.
